The exhibit will run from June 6, through June 30, 2008. A meet and greet reception with this dynamic duo will take place on opening night, Friday, June 6, starting at 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M.

Celebrate this duo with us and also take advantage of the opportunity to pick up a great piece of art for that special father on his day.

Wade Anthony Harrison

Born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Grover Cummings, Harrison was encouraged to express himself through art from the very beginning. He started painting from the bed sheets, to the walls, onto paper. According to the artist, he used his art as a way of expression and to release his emotions.

During elementary school, Harrison was directed and sponsored by his principal to take art classes at The Toledo Museum of Art as a way to positively focus his energies.

Growing up in the late 60’s and early 70’s, he became influenced by the tide of the Black Power movement. Taking his self awareness cues from his mother and coupling that with the creative talent of his photographer father, he gravitated towards those musical expressions that were revolutionary – namely jazz, reggae and, eventually, hip hop. He consequently became infamous and influential in another revolution, the emerging Toledo graffiti art revolution, under the tag “Swade.”

Harrison continued his art education at the art institute of Pittsburgh, where he obtained his associate’s degree. Following a brief stint with an advertising agency in graphic design, Harrison concentrated more on his work as a fine artist. His style has since evolved into an exploratory freedom reflective of the music to which he listens.

His oil and acrylic paintings, primarily portraits, are emotionally expressed in a depth of monochromatic tones and lively colors, meant to evoke the observer to feel and hear the sounds that complete the work.

Harrison has participated in several exhibits throughout Toledo, notably, the Art-O-Matic 419 and his private solo show “Life Begins at 40.” Most recently, Wade has participated in shows in Detroit, Michigan and Atlanta, Georgia.

Grover Cummings

Grover Cummings career as a photographer begin after his enlistment in the United States Air Force in 1961. His military testing scores were high in the fields of music and art. These results led to his being sent to school to learn photography and video. His job consisted of photographing portraits, accident investigations, and other assorted assignments which helped hone his skills, while serving his country.

After his discharge in 1965, he moved to Columbus for one year before returning to his hometown of Toledo, Ohio. He worked for the East Toledo Neighborhood House (a recreation center) again resuming his skills as a photographer. His assignments included sports, neighborhood and social events, and other various functions in the area.

In 1968 Cummings became a photographer for The Toledo Blade, while going to school for advanced photography and creative writing. During his tenure he won numerous awards for his journalistic talents. He also had the opportunity to photograph many famous personalities, such as, Isaac Hayes, Governor Edmund Muskie, Alice Cooper, Lola Falana, and many others.

Cummings is currently enjoying his time as a free lance photographer, shooting models, weddings, functions, and entering photo contest and exhibitions.
