A Salute to Scholars: A Celebration of Learning
Sojourner’s Truth Staff
The Toledo Public Schools Foundation recognized academic
excellence for the eighth year in a row on Thursday, May 8,
2008, in the Terrace Room at the Inverness Club at an awards
ceremony titled “A Salute to Scholars: A Celebration of
Learning.” |

An audience of diners that flowed over into the adjoining
room helped the TPS Foundation honor 12 educators and 62
students with a total of $94,150 in grants and scholarships.
“We are pleased to report that we are awarding a record
amount of college scholarships to TPS students and grants to
educators this year,” said TPS Foundation Executive Director
Susan Zurawski. “Most of the college scholarships being
awarded are named scholarships from donors who decided to
pass on to others the advantages that they were afforded.
Theirs is quite literally a gift of a lifetime”
In fact, many of the donors were present to personally
present the grants and scholarships to the honorees.
“This is our way of giving back. Our mission is to promote
quality public education,” said Mistress of Ceremonies and
President of the
TPS
Foundation's Governing Board,
Edna
Robertson, a retired TPS educator and also – along with her
husband Tyronne Robertson – one of the many scholarship
donors.

“Academic excellence is what we exist for,” said Toledo
Board of Education President Steve Steel, Ph.D. “Everything
else is ancillary.”
The evening’s keynote speaker was Lucas County Common Please
Judge Charles J. Doneghy. Doneghy, who is a product of
Toledo Public Schools – a graduate of Libbey High School,
spoke extensively of his own childhood and his experiences
in being raised in a single mother home. “Our family was
poor materially but we were rich spiritually,” said Doneghy.
In a direct address to the many students in the audience,
Doneghy urged them to “give thanks for whatever
circumstances you come from.” |
