ART TATUM JAZZ HERITAGE FESTIVAL ...
Honors and Celebrates JAZZ.
Music, music and more music, will envelop Promenade Park
this weekend as the area celebrates the legacy of Toledo's
Art Tatum, considered the
premier jazz pianist.
The Art Tatum Jazz Heritage Festival kicks off on Friday
night at 5 PM and continues Saturday and Sunday at 4 PM.
Saturday night musicians are invited to bring instruments
for the JAM Session (no plug - ins).
The Festival sponsored by The Chrysler Foundation brings
together the area's extraordinary local talent and
headliners from across the continent.
Carol Welsman…singer/pianist…Canadian Smooth Jazz
Pianist/Keyboardist Award for 2006 and the Vocalist Award
for 2007, she has played with Herbie Hancock and Bill
Clinton… a graduate of Berklee College of Music
Joseph Vincelli…high
energy saxophonist…he’s been loved by Toledo Audiences since
he opened here for Al Jarreau at 1994’s JazzFest a graduate
of Berklee College of Music
Tony Monaco…Columbus, Ohio based master of the
Hammond B-3 Organ (Mr Burnin’-B3) has been performing for
forty years and is a musician’s musician…an educator and
innovator, he recently returned from his first World Tour
and is currently working on his “Mother Hen Music Education”
Series.
Steve Oliver…a
brilliant, innovative guitarist/singer…he combines great
musical skills with extraordinary technology for an amazing
performance
Peter White…long
time Toledo favorite guitar player, who always delights the
audience …with Peter on the stage, you can’t stay in your
seat…Guitars and Saxes brings him together with:
Gerald Albright...Whether
straight ahead or smooth jazz, he’s played his sax with
many of the greats…Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan
and Bill Clinton at the White House.
Jeff Lorber…One
of the creators of the music now known as “smooth” jazz,
this multi faceted keyboardist has been recording and
producing for every major star for over thirty years…funk,
jazz and R &B… he’s a multiple Grammy Award Nominee
Jeff Golub…
Ohio born guitarist, has played with artists including Bob
James, Ashford and Simpson and toured with Rod Stewart for a
number of years before moving into smooth jazz with his
group “Avenue Blue”. He has recorded numerous albums and has
an uncanny way of putting a big smile on the face of those
that hear his music… a graduate of Berklee College of Music.
The Festival will celebrate Father's Day with an evening
in New Orleans. Ellis Marsalis,
the father of the renown Marsalis family of musicians is the
headliner Sunday. Playing with Ellis is his son, drummer
Jason Marsalis.
John Ellis & Double Wide, jazzy and funky and The
Jonathan Batiste Band. Jonathan is a musical
threat...pianist, vocalist and harmonoboard.
John Ellis and Jonathan Batiste both trained with Ellis
Marsalis.
