Career Exploration Fair Sponsored by Local Groups

On Saturday, March 13, 2010, the Beta Gamma Xinos and Kudos,
National Association of Negro Business and Professional
Women’s Toledo Youth Club, and Kent Branch Library sponsored
a Career Exploration Fair at the Kent Branch Library for
youth in the Toledo community.

The Fair included a panelist of young professional
African-Americans who shared their educational career paths
and experiences. The panelist included: Treva Jeffries,
Toledo Public Schools educator; Andy Duckworth, TPS
educator; Erin King, 2009 University of Toledo graduate;
Pastor Arthur Battle; Schylar Meadows, radio personality and
Dorian Hooker, Summit YMCA executive director.
Duckworth focused his address on D R E A M: D-defy odds, R-
run track or get involve, E-evaluate yourself constantly, A
– ask questions and M – the mind is powerful so
challenge yourself by reading more and staying focused.
Battles emphasized the importance of having a passion for
what you do and not being miserable in a job just to make a
lot of money.
The Exploration Fair also included presentations by Melissa
Jeter, Kent Branch Library, on ways to utilize the library
as a resource to research college scholarships. Armando
Bejarano of UT, provided information about scholarships that
are available at UT such as the Blue and Gold. He also
distributed UT brochures and College Planning Guides for
sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Frances Collins, Ph.D., Toledo Youth Club advisor and TPS
educator, gave a presentation on Test Taking Strategies for
the OGT/OAT. She emphasized the importance of reading,
thinking, completing short and extended responses, utilizing
graphic organizers, viewing the test as a continuous
document, eating properly, and using common sense and prior
knowledge.
Linda Collins, Beta Gamma Kudos Advisor and TPS educator,
gave a presentation on Interview Etiquette. She gave advice
about wearing blue suits, silk ties, and smaller earring,
being articulate, having volunteer experience, and
demonstrating how you can contribute to the company. India
Santos, Beta Gamma Xinos advisor and TPS educator, helped
coordinate the Career Exploration Fair but was unable to
attend.
Isis Darks, president of the Toledo Youth Club and Start
High School senior, and TiRohn Saunders, president of Beta
Gamma Kudos and Scott High School junior served as
moderators.
The other Toledo Youth Club members who attended the Fair
were: D’Vaughn McGill, Chenell Olds, Dontai Robinson,
Derrick Smith, Paula Smith, Melissa Smith and Opal Dunlap.
Beta Gamma Xinos and Kudos members who attended were Tiara
Peterson and Shaun Alkins respectively. Bethelem Baptist
Church Youth Group and The Top Teens Youth Group also
attended the Fair.
