Daddy stated that as a
young man, his mother (Big Momma) asked him to walk to a
wedding with her, so he did. The wedding was at the home of
George and Alice Sparks, (my grandparents). He stated that
at the wedding, he saw my mother across the room talking to
someone and knew right then that she had captivated his
heart. Maybe not his exact words, but the meaning is the
same. After two years of dating and 66 years of marriage
later, they are still hanging tough.
“You have captivated my
heart, my sister, my bride; you have captivated my heart
with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your
necklace.” Song of Solomon 4:9
I say hanging tough
because as every married couple can attest to, not every day
is one of sunshine, blue skies and roses; sometimes you have
to go through the rain and through some storms to appreciate
the sunshine, blue skies and the roses that bloom from the
rain. I learned from them that you have to put God in the
midst of it all, and sometimes you just have to turn it over
to God and he will work it out.
They both have a beautiful
spirit and a very loving heart. They love children, family
and friends. They love showing you their love by giving of
themselves in service, by feeding you, teaching you, and if
you are in need, they will help you if they can. Family and
fellowship with family is very important to both of them.
This past December when I
came home for Christmas, I noticed something very special
happen. Every morning daddy would come downstairs and sit in
his recliner and then shortly after, momma would come down.
The first thing that she did was not to go into the kitchen
but to go over to him. They hugged each other, and then gave
each other a good morning kiss and would say, “I Love You
and I Love You Too.” I could see the love and I could feel
the love that they continue to have.
Do you still greet your
spouse with a kiss and a hug in the morning? Could this be
one of the keys to a lasting marriage? Ever-lasting,
Ever-loving, Never-ending LOVE!
These two beautiful people
are not just my parents however I am the youngest, Karen.
They are also the loving parents of, Chee-Si (Althea), Derek
and Niecey (Dennis). They have 11 grandchildren and I am not
sure how many great-grandchildren.
Momma will be 86 years
young this year and daddy will be 88 years young. We are so
thankful that God continues to bless and shine his grace and
mercy upon them.
“Let love and faithfulness
never leave, bind them around your neck, write them on the
tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good
name in the sight of God and man.” Proverbs 3:3-4
