The CSRN Juneteenth
Celebration
The Community Solidarity
Response Network celebrated Juneteenth on Friday, June 19 by
organizing a march from Swayne Field to the Frederick
Douglass Community Association – a 1.1 mile trek that was
not only a celebration of the event in 1865 when Union
soldiers in Texas informed the enslaved that were free, but
also an acknowledgement of the painful events of recent
weeks.
"It’s all about love
today," said the event master of ceremonies, Washington
Muhammad, as he and the other CSRN speakers, Ruth Leonard
and Julian Mack, recognized the efforts of the current Black
Lives Matter mo ment,
but focused on Juneteenth and its significance.
"It’s a day of celebration for the Black
community," said Leonard. "Texas finally got the word, a
year and a half after the Emancipation Proclama tion
was written, that slavery was over."
The Juneteenth
march was a collaboration between CSRN and 3 Heart Learning
Institute and Child Care. Alexicia Sims, co-owner of 3
Heart, also addressed the marchers about the need to instill
in youth the right way to be heard while being respectful
and peaceful.
