Rep. Sobecki: We Need a State Health Director Immediately
Call follows another record-shattering
day of COVID-19 cases in Ohio
Following another
record-shattering day of COVID-19 cases in Ohio, State Rep.
Lisa Sobecki (D-Toledo) issued a statement today calling for
Gov. Mike DeWine to appoint a state health director
immediately. Ohio reported 3,845 new COVID-19 cases over the
last 24 hours. This marks the second time this week that
Ohio has seen an increase of over 3,000 new cases in a 24
hour period.
"Since the departure of Dr.
Acton from the helm of the state of Ohio's response to COVID,
Ohio is going in the wrong direction, fast," said Rep.
Sobecki. "Dr. Acton was a calming and knowledgeable voice
during the pandemic and gave valuable advice to Governor
DeWine. Without a permeant and qualified head of the ODH,
who is the Governor relying on? The Governor needs to
appoint a new health director as soon as possible, one who
is going to be able to once again help Ohio flatten the
curve and stop COVID-19."
Ohio has been without a
state health director following the sudden resignation of
Dr. Amy Acton over four months ago. Despite receiving praise
from across the country for Ohio's handling of the COVID-19
pandemic under her tenure, Dr. Acton was criticized by
Republican members of the Statehouse, and had numerous death
threats against her and her family. Dr. Acton's replacement,
Dr. Joan Duwve withdrew her acceptance of the position in
September after learning more about the threats against Dr.
Acton.
