Alpha Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. held its 23rd annual MLK Scholarship Breakfast on Saturday, January 17, at the The Pinnacle.

Michael S. Stubblefield welcomed guests and shared the purpose of the scholarship fundraiser, which is to assist local high school seniors with the financial costs of obtaining a higher education. This year’s theme was "Fulfilling the Dream.”

Misha Hemphill sang the black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” followed by the keynote speaker, Rev. Talmadge J. Thomas, who emphasized the importance of community involvement.

Each year the fraternity recognizes a member of the community for his or her outstanding leadership and community service. This year’s recipient was Romules Durant, Ed.D, superintendent of Toledo Public Schools.

The Alpha Phi Alpha chapter’s scholarship fund, which raises more than $5,000 in annual scholarships for college-bound Toledo-area youth, was distributed to five deserving young men. The 2014 Scholarship recipients: Jordon Bush, graduate of Lakewood St. Edward High School – Howard University; Solomon B. Collins, graduate of Maumee Valley Country Day School – Loyola University Chicago; Keith Pace, Jr., graduate of St. John’s Jesuit High School – Otterbein University; Torrence P. Price, graduate of Central Catholic High School – Hampton University; Keon Rayford, graduate of Rogers High School – Bowling Green State University.
