Alpha Phi Alpha’s Annual MLK Scholarship Breakfast

Alpha Xi Lambda Chapter of
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. held its 23rd annual MLK
Scholarship Breakfast on Saturday, January 17, at the The
Pinnacle.
Michael S. Stubblefield
welcomed guests and shared the purpose of the scholarship
fundraiser, which is to assist local high school seniors
with the financial costs of obtaining a higher education.
This year’s theme was "Fulfilling the Dream.”
Misha Hemphill sang the
black national anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” followed
by the keynote speaker, Rev. Talmadge J. Thomas, who
emphasized the importance of community involvement.
Each year the fraternity
recognizes a member of the community for his or her
outstanding leadership and community service. This year’s
recipient was Romules Durant, Ed.D, superintendent of Toledo
Public Schools.
The Alpha Phi Alpha
chapter’s scholarship fund, which raises more than $5,000 in
annual scholarships for college-bound Toledo-area youth, was
distributed to five deserving young men. The 2014
Scholarship recipients: Jordon Bush, graduate of Lakewood
St. Edward High School – Howard University; Solomon
B. Collins, graduate of Maumee Valley Country Day School –
Loyola University Chicago; Keith Pace, Jr., graduate
of St. John’s Jesuit High School – Otterbein University;
Torrence P. Price, graduate of Central Catholic High School
– Hampton University; Keon Rayford, graduate of
Rogers High School – Bowling Green State University.
Alpha Xi Lambda Chapter,
Toledo, Ohio was founded November 3, 1928. For the past 85
years, Alpha men in Toledo have been leaders in education,
politics, business, medicine, law and a host of other
professions.
Lucas County Metropolitan Housing Authority, the University
of Toledo, Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority,
African-American Leadership Council of the United Way and
