TPS to Host Annual Volunteer Luncheon
Nearly 200 people are expected to attend the district’s
annual Volunteer Luncheon at the UAW Hall at 2600 Ashland
Avenue on Thursday, May 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m..
Volunteers work countless hours each year in schools across
the district in support of TPS students – volunteer
opportunities range from working in the library to answering
phones in the main office to opening ketchup packs for
younger students during lunchtime. ‘Volunteer of the Year
Awards’ will be given to eight individuals and three
community partners. They were nominated by TPS staff members
in recognition of their dedication to the students and the
district.

better leaders on the field and off. A Student Athlete
Leadership Summit is being held at the Toledo Board of
Education building on Friday, May 15, from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.
The topics of the day include: The Life of Social Media;

Athlete and Domestic Violence & Self Identity in Sports.

Special Olympics Return to TPS
Toledo Public Schools is again hosting two days of Special
Olympics competition at Start High School. The inaugural
event proved so successful last year that volunteers,
including University of Toledo football players, have been
lining up to help guide the athletes throughout the day.
There will be a full roster of track and field events, as
well as an opening ceremony that will feature an honor guard
as well as awards ceremony for each event. New this year is
a special area for the district’s very smallest athletes,
overseen by the staff of Head Start. The first day of events
is this Friday and will be for schools in the Start, Waite
and Woodward learning communities. (There will be some
athletes from other districts as well). The second day of
competition is set for Friday, May 22, at Rogers, with
schools in the Bowsher, Rogers and Scott learning
communities competing. May 29 is reserved as a rain day. TPS
students can start training for Special Olympics as
kindergartners and those age eight and older are eligible to
compete in as many sports as they train for.
