While the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library provides
information and assistance in numerous ways, to our business
community, seniors, and homebound, the Library’s 2015
Summer Reading Challenge (SRC): Escape the Ordinary! is
underway! It kicked off on Monday, June 8, and will run
through August 8.
This program partners with our schools and provides
intentional summer learning opportunities that address the
“summer learning slide.” Public libraries are and have been
on the threshold of creating a revolution leading to the
development of summer learning here and around the nation
that impacts academic achievement of our children,
especially those who live in poverty in our community.
This annual program, which includes prizes and fun
incentives, is designed to strongly encourage young people
to read during the summer months. Studies suggest that
summer reading is consistently related to academic success.
SRC is available to all age groups, even adults can sign up!
Reading statistics also reveal that children in every income
group who read six or more books over the summer gained more
in reading achievement than children who did not. Taking
advantage of your nearest neighborhood public library during
the summer is predictive of vocabulary gains constituting
the intellectual growth of children.
Additional studies suggest that children who read more books
over the summer fared better on reading-comprehension tests
when they returned to school in the fall, compared to their
peers who had read one or no books.
Your library system encourages the entire community to take
advantage of Summer Reading Challenge: Escape the Ordinary!,
where adults, teens and young people can participate.
Encourage summer reading, sign up now via
src.toledolibrary.org, and help your library and especially
our youth to escape the ordinary – a pledge that will
help them succeed in school and in life.
Log on to src.toledolibrary.org for more details or to
register. Also, sign up at any neighborhood library
location.
