Three Things to Consider During Breast Cancer Awareness
Month
Special to The Truth
Approximately 12 percent
of women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer
during their lifetime, according to the American Cancer
Society (ACS).
October marks Breast
Cancer Awareness Month and is an ideal time to learn more
about the disease. Here are some things to consider:
• Screening improves the
chances of early detection of breast cancer, when it is
easier to treat. Follow the ACS’s guidelines for detection.
Their recommendations include that women age 40 and older
have a mammogram annually, and that women in their 20s and
30s have a clinical breast exam during their regular health
exam -- preferably every three years.
• Healthy lifestyle
choices can help reduce one’s risk for developing breast
cancer: eat a healthful diet, get regular physical activity
and reduce alcohol intake.
• Volunteer and
fundraising opportunities abound that support the fight
against breast cancer. To learn more about how you can get
