Annual Caregiver Expo Helps Those Who Are Stressed Caring
for Aging Loved Ones
Special to The Truth
The Area Office on Aging’s eighth annual Caregiver Expo on
Saturday, November 14 at Parkway Place, 2592 Parkway Plaza
in Maumee will connect a family member who is caring for a
loved one with resources to help them care for their love
one. The event goes from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
The average family caregiver provides 20 hours per week on
unpaid caregiving activities and spends over $5,000 per year
on out of pocket caregiving expenses for their aging loved
one. While the emotional, physical and financial stress of
the family caregiver role is undeniable, the good news is
that the Area Office on Aging has gathered together the best
resources and speakers to be able to support these family
caregivers so they can care longer.
This selfless work of caring for a loved one can be
extremely stressful and can eventually take a toll on the
health of the family caregiver, if the caregiver does not
make a conscious effort to take care of themselves. The
event will connect caregivers with information, services and
products that can provide them with a temporary break from
their caregiving role to help alleviate some of the
caregiving stress and help them remain in their caregiving
role longer.
The event will feature about 70 organizations that provide
products, services and information to help family caregivers
as well as nationally renowned speakers. Barbara McVicker
is a professional eldercare expert speaker focusing on
financial, emotional and physical stress of caregiving.
Also, bringing his offbeat blend of humor and practical
advice will be northwest Ohio native Jeff Yeager speaking on
the topic of “Men Are Caregivers Too.”
