TPS Foundation Receives Donation from Medical Mutual of Ohio

Sojourner’s Truth Staff

This week, a representative of Medical Mutual of Ohio presented the Toledo Public Schools Foundation with a donation of $450,000. The money will be disbursed over a three-year period and will help fund college scholarships for TPS high school students. A portion of the donation will also be used to expand the district’s Young Men of Excellence and Young Women of Excellence mentorship programs.

The TPS Foundation is currently undergoing a revitalization with new leadership in place and a new lineup in its board of directors – most of whom are TPS graduates.

Medical Mutual of Ohio is the oldest and largest health insurance company based in Ohio. The company’s home office is located in Cleveland and the Toledo office has nearly 500 employees. The company serves more than 1.4 million customers.

Noting the current financial difficulties that many public school systems face, TPS Superintendent Romules Durant, Ed.D, spoke of the district’s efforts in trying to expand its financial base. “We continue to be very creative in leveraging support from the private sector,” said Durant during the check presentation ceremony. He applauded the community members who have stepped up to assist the district.

“We are thrilled to support Toledo Public Schools,” said Frank Bloomquist, vice president of the Northwest Region for Medical Mutual. “This reflects our company’s philosophy of supporting the community.”

Also speaking at the presentation were two Waite High School students who are members of Young Men of Excellence – Anthony Ashford and Darren Nichols.

Ashford spoke of his previous difficulties during his first two years at Waite and the numerous disciplinary penalties he faced. After joining YMOE, Ashford has been inspired, in his last two years, “to be excellent.”

“The group has opened up doors for my brothers and sisters to achieve at a high level,” said Ashford.

Nichols said the organization and its mentors had “helped me when I needed it the most.”

“Collective work matters,” said Durant touting the effectiveness of the two student programs he initiated.
