Toledo Black Lives Matter Organization Honors Young Contributors and Volunteers

Sojourner’s Truth Staff

On Sunday, April 17, the Community, Solidarity, Response Network of Toledo, a local group promoting the Black Lives Matter movement, will hold a fundraising dinner at the Frederick Douglass Community Association to honor the young volunteers and contributors who have had an impact on the group and the movement.

The proceeds from the first annual Black Lives Matter Awards dinner will be donated to four local non-profit organizations: MLK Kitchen for the Poor; Ben E. Williams Youth Services; Soul City Boxing, Inc and FAME Studios.

“For the last year or two, the awareness of social injustice has been on the rise and a lot of tactics and approaches have been used, such as rallies and street protests,” says Washington Muhammad, a representative of the Network and an organizer of the fundraiser. “And all are tools in our tool kit.

“However, we wanted to take a different approach and honor the young people who have been with us all along,” Muhammad continued. “We wanted to address the 40 and unders who have made a difference.”

One of the key elements of this approach, said Muhammad, is the decision by the Network to donate to existing groups who have been active in the community. “It’s a different approach to social justice – sometimes we don’t look at those doing the hard work; sometimes we can assist those in the community already doing that hard work rather than starting something new.”

There are still tickets available for the 5:00 p.m. dinner. Call 419-973-0248 for more information.
