“For the
last year or two, the awareness of social injustice has been
on the rise and a lot of tactics and approaches have been
used, such as rallies and street protests,” says Washington
Muhammad, a representative of the Network and an organizer
of the fundraiser. “And all are tools in our tool kit.
“However,
we wanted to take a different approach and honor the young
people who have been with us all along,” Muhammad continued.
“We wanted to address the 40 and unders who have made a
difference.”
One of the
key elements of this approach, said Muhammad, is the
decision by the Network to donate to existing groups who
have been active in the community. “It’s a different
approach to social justice – sometimes we don’t look at
those doing the hard work; sometimes we can assist those in
the community already doing that hard work rather than
starting something new.”
