Library Summer
Reading Challenge Prevents Summer Slide
Special to The Truth
Summer break for students is synonymous with fun.
Unfortunately, it’s also the time when many youth fall
behind in reading and math.
“Summer slide” is the well-documented tendency for students,
especially those from low-income families, to lose some of
the achievement gains they made during the previous school
year.
Parents and teachers, have
no fear, the Toledo Lucas County Public Library has you
covered. Our Summer Reading Challenge On Your Mark, Get
Set…Read!, is designed to not only prevent summer slide,
but also to actually produce learning gains. It further
reflects the library’s commitment to understanding and
addressing the needs of its customers and the community at
large.
Libraries play an
important role in enhancing children’s education during the
summer months, and prove that it can be done by having fun (and
winning prizes)!
We began the transformation of our summer reading program
last summer and are continuing to improve and change the
program to create positive outcomes for the youth in our
community. So far it has been a wild success - more than
17,000 people registered as of mid-Week 4—a number that
we did not reach until Week 7 in 2015!
It is not too late to sign up! Visit
