Central-city
Youth Receive Funds for Shopping Trip
Children, families and the community attend festive event
with Santa.
Special to The Truth
On Saturday, December 17,
2016, approximately 50 central-city youth, enrolled in
Wayman D. Palmer Community YMCA afterschool care programs or
who participate in youth sports programs at the branch, each
received $50.00 to purchase clothing for themselves during
the YMCA’s annual holiday shopping trip.
The shopping trip and
party to follow was made possible by Edna Vena, who left a
generous gift to the YMCA of Greater Toledo in 1938 to
provide clothing for central-city children during the
holiday season.
The children shopped at
Walmart on Glendale Ave. from 7:30 – 9:30 am. YMCA
volunteers and staff were on hand to assist the children
with their purchases.
After the shopping trip,
the children returned to the Wayman Palmer YMCA, 2053 N. 14th
Street for a holiday party. The party was free and open to
the community.
Pizza was served at 11:00
a.m., followed by fun activities including a Christmas
Program featuring the YMCA Child Care children. There were
also games to play, Christmas carols to enjoy and the
opportunity to meet a special guest, Santa Claus.
