The Glass CIty Natural Hair Symposium

By Megan Davis

The Soulcial Scene Contributor

The Glass City Natural Hair Symposium is this Saturday at the Heatherdowns Country Club and it’s bringing local naturalistas an experience to remember. From 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM, attendees will be able to shop from a variety of Black small businesses featuring natural tees, products, skincare, handmade jewelry, accessories and more! The marketplace will be open to the public all day with a $5 admission. Teens will make their own natural hair and skincare product in the Young Naturalistas DIY lab, lead by the University of Toledo’s Natural HAIRitage group. Curlfriends can gather at the photo booth where Anointed Photography will be snapping pictures, available on-the-spot for purchase!

Throughout the marketplace, guests will be able to engage in the #GCNHS experience with InFROstations, head wrapping demos, compelling hair-tales, a class on maximizing texture, and other activities. At noon, the VIP luncheon will commence with keynote speaker, Sonia Flunder-McNair, urban farmer and CEO of Sonia Organics sharing how a health crisis  lead her to research and create her own brand of naturopathic healing. Following the keynote address, an esteemed panel will address pressing topics in the natural hair world from finding the right shape for your natural hair, branding your own beauty, managing hair loss and dealing with the impact of systematic racism in the workplace. Dr. Hope Mitchell, CEO of Mitchell Dermatology, Tawann Gaston of Groomed Toledo and TiAnna Anderson of Anderson Innovative Marketing will share their expertise with VIP Naturalistas that registered for the luncheon in advance.

Model, mentor and artist, Meeche El will be hosting naturalistas throughout the event, sharing her experiences and positive affirmations, especially with young ladies who may be attending with their mothers and aunts. Follow the hashtag #GCNHS throughout the day to take part in online polls and contests through Facebook.

The Glass City Natural Hair Symposium  2018 is proudly presented by The Kitchen Salon, with VIP Swag Bag sponsors Curls, Avlon/Keracare, TGIN, Oyin Handmade, Mari’s Oasis, Author Taylor Love and Optimistic Movement. The University of Toledo’s Natural HAIRitage organization hosts its second annual expo and fashion show

On Saturday, April 14, the Natural HAIRitage student organization at UT, hosted its 2nd annual expo and fashion show entitled Cirque Du Solslay. This one day event was held in the student union’s Ingman Room, and opened with the expo, featuring local vendors for shopping and networking followed by the fashion show.

Two presentations were made by Robert Harris, chef/owner of the Greenleaf Cafe, Toledo’s only vegetarian soul food spot. Harris discussed responsible food options for restorative health and wellness while giving facts about certain foods and their links to cancer and other diseases. The audience was encouraged to ask questions and they were addressed by Harris, dispelling some myths about vegetarian foods and giving insight on the may benefits of a vegetable-based diet.

The second presentation was by me, Megan Davis, CEO of The Kitchen Salon. I covered the top 10 natural hair care needs: hair growth, protective styling, hair loss, product remixing, night routines, multi-functional styles, building a regimen, establishing a support system, style tips, and acceptance in today’s social climate. I demonstrated management tips using a mannequin and a display of a natural hair toolkit for successful care.

The fashion show had an energetic MC D Wade, who held a dance contest, juggling contest and gave away natural hair products by Jessicurl, Curls, and Miss Jessie’s. The DJ spun popular tracks  as the crowd prepared for the models to take the runway. The scenes featured a homage to The Black Panther, King of Wakanda and the members of the Dora Milaje; a segment on yoga to the sounds of Janelle Monae’s song with the same title; a beautiful array of Ankara-clad Kings and Queens and the feature, Cirque Du Solslay, an interpretation of the popular Vegas show. Over 30 models graced the stage for an epic event for this student organization.
