Toledo Jazz Orchestra Announces New Season

Special to The Truth

Do you miss the days of the great jazz clubs in Toledo like Murphy's and Rusty's? The Toledo Jazz Orchestra will be back in September with the first of their "Black&White Transportation Bistro Series" concerts, to re-create those cool jazz nights of great music. The concerts take place in the ballroom behind the downtown Toledo restaurant Registry Bistro on North Superior Street from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M., and are set up in cabaret-style (small tables to share with friends)  with free light hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar.

On Thursday, September 20, Scott Lavender and Dr. Jim Young are featured. Scott is the Music Director for Johnny Mathis, and will accompany Jim's vocals and share stories about his life on the road. Next up, on Thursday, October 25, is the great Ramona Collins singing with a combo. It's her birthday but we will leave it up to her to tell you which one!

The TJO big band concerts will follow; starting on Saturday, November 5, at 8:00 at the Valentine Theatre with the Toledo homecoming of conductor Gary Urwin. Gary is a Rogers High School grad made good; he directs a big band in L.A composed of the best studio musicians around, and will be bringing his arrangements to Toledo as well as his saxophonist friend Pete Christlieb. Pete played on the Tonight show with Johnny Carson for 20 years, and was the featured sax soloist on Natalie Cole's big hit, "Unforgettable". This will be an "unforgettable" concert!

Last of the 2018 concerts will be the perennial favorite, the annual Holiday Concert. On Saturday, December 15 at 8:00 at the Valentine, bring the family to hear the entire Duke Ellington Nutcracker Suite, along with other holiday favorites. Santa's visit and the usual array of surprises will keep your family entertained!

Season tickets are available for both the Bistro series and the Valentine series, and may be purchased at the Valentine Theatre Box office by calling 419-242-2787, or in person. Individual tickets to the Bistro concerts are $35 and from $30 to $40 for the Valentine series.
