Friends
Sojourner’s Truth Staff
Myrtice Walker was born in
Macon County, Georgia – probably Montezuma, GA – and moved
to Swanton, OH as a child with her family. That birth took
place 100 years ago and on Friday, April 24 – two days
before her birthday – she celebrated the event at the
Spencer Township Neighborhood Center in Holland, OH.
The actual birth place is
uncertain because her records are incomplete. It is known
that she had 12 older siblings. It is also known that she
received no formal schooling in the segregated South but
taught herself to read and write. She still reads from her
favorite book, the Bible, every night.
