Ashford Announces State Funding for Safety Updates at the
University of Toledo
Project will bring elevators up to code, enhance student
safety

State Representative Michael Ashford (D-Toledo) this week
announced the University of Toledo has been granted approval
to contract with DLZ Architecture Incorporated to conduct
the Elevator Safety Repairs and Replacements project on
campus. The state Controlling Board today approved a total
of $244,500 for the repair and replacement of five elevators
on the Main Campus.
“Many buildings around University of Toledo’s campus still
have their original elevator with little updates since the
original installation,” said Rep. Ashford. “The Elevator
Safety Repairs and Replacements project is being conducted
for the safety of our students and to ensure all elevators
are up to date with the newest security standards. I am
pleased this state funding will help make campus buildings
safer for our students and faculty.”
DLZ Architecture Inc. was chosen by the Department of
Facilities and Construction to help carry out this project
based on the company’s knowledge and collective experience
of their proposed team. The firm conducted an assessment
which concluded that 16 elevators around all three campus’s
needed repairs, but the 5 most critical will receive the
funding for replacements first.
This project will upgrade some 40-50 year old elevators and
bring the elevator machine rooms up to par with code
compliance. These upgrades will result in minimized
maintenance, increased safety, and improved appearance of
elevator cabs.
