Local AKA Chapters Hold Founders Day Celebration

The local chapters of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc - Zeta Alpha Omega, Alpha Lambda and Iota Iota – celebrated the sorority’s Founders’ Day on February 20, 2016 at the Radisson Hotel at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus.

This year’s program featured guest speaker Schylbea Jean Hopkins, a long-time AKA member and the 26th Great Lakes Regional Director of the sorority.

Angeline Murry, Founders’ Day chairman, served as mistress of ceremonies for this year’s program and attendees were welcomed by Felicia Dunston, president of Zeta Alpha Omega – the graduate chapter. Greetings were offered by Amani Brown, president f the Alpha Lambda Chapter of UT and by Tiffani Smith, president of the Iota Iota Chapter of Bowling Green State University.

Solos were offered by Marcia Bowen-Jones.

Along with Murry, Debra Fulton, DDS, served as co-chairman of the Founders’ Day committee and other members were: Elinor Allen; Jacalyn Brown; Marie Bush, Ph.D; Donnetta Carter; Alice Cole; Clara Connor-Petty; Mary Dawson; Morgannia Dawson; Pamela Green-Jones; Joan Harris; Julia Holt; Margaret Huntley; Katina Johnson; Carolyn Lewis; Theo Simmons-Hampton; Barbara Tucker; Deborah Washington, Ph.D; Pamela Wilson and Janece Woulard.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc was founded in 1908 and over the years, members have focused on five target areas of service: educational enrichment, health promotion, family strengthening, environmental ownership and global impact.
