Michael Ashford (D-Toledo) last week announced the release
of $60,000 in state funds to the Toledo Correction
Institution (ToCI) to obtain fire damper inspections and
exhaust system cleaning from Toledo-based VC Systems, LLC.
The state funding was approved today by the state
Controlling Board, a panel tasked with oversight of state
spending.
“Since its inception, Toledo
Correction Institution has been committed to not only
recruiting dedicated, hardworking staff, but also preparing
its inmates to return to be active members of society and
possess the skills needed for today’s workforce,” said
Ashford. “The state investment approved today will help
ensure the continued safety of the institution’s staff and
volunteers.”
Opened in 2000, the Toledo
Correctional Institute currently houses approximately 1,200
inmates and is staffed by 409 employees. The funds approved
today will help provide fire and smoke dampers inspections
and the cleaning of exhaust systems, as required by Ohio
safety codes every four years. The dampers and exhaust
systems were installed sixteen years ago when the facility
first opened and are due for cleaning and inspection.
ToCI offers a wide range of
programs and services to inmates to prepare them to
successfully transition back into society and reduce
recidivism. Programs include: Academic, GED and Adult Basic
Education (ABLE) programs; apprenticeship programs for dog
handling, maintenance work and more; and community
activities like arts and crafts.
