Lifelong Learning offers fun lineup of classes, lectures and
travel opportunities

The Lourdes University Lifelong Learning program has
compiled a great lineup of classes, lectures and travel
opportunities.
Friday Lectures and Hot Topics
Once a month, Lifelong Learning offers a Friday lecture at
10 a.m. followed by a Hot Topic discussion at 11:15 a.m. in
the Franciscan Center of Lourdes University, 6832 Convent
Blvd. in Sylvania. Refreshments are available beginning at
9:15 a.m. The lectures are free to first-time attendees and
Lifelong Learning members. The cost for each Hot Topic
meeting is $10 for members and $15 for non-members.
September 18
“Raising the Poor to Self Determination”
Baldemar Velásquez, an internationally recognized leader in
the farmworker and immigrant rights movements, speaks about
his work in unionizing and empowering the most marginalized
workers in the country and his current work with Toledo’s
urban youth in an employment readiness and leadership
program. Velásquez has been named a MacArthur Fellow and
awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle for his work.
The Hot Topic Discussion that follows features Deb Chany of
the Sylvania Community Action Team addressing “Marijuana
on the Ohio Ballot … what do I need to know?”

Interstate Construction in NW Ohio: How ODOT is Improving
our Highway System
Ohio Department of Transportation’s public information
officer Theresa Pollick explains how the construction in our
region not only upgrades the condition of the roads we drive
on, but improves safety, and reduces congestion as well.
The Hot Topic Discussion that follows features Marilyn
Zielinski, technical services manager at the Toledo-Lucas
County Public Library, addressing “The Toledo Library for
Lifelong Learning.”

A Culinary History of the Great Black Swamp: Buckeye Candy,
Bratwurst & Apple Butter
Nathan C. Crook, Ph.D, cultural anthropologist and
instructor at Ohio State University, discusses the cultural
significance of regional and local foods and his research
into the myriad uses of food as community and communication.
The Hot Topic Discussion that follows features Marya Czech,
regional environmentalist and free-range ecologist,
addressing “Is it Safe to Drink the Water?”
December 18
Wild Horse Population Control by Contraceptive Vaccine: Why
and How
John Turner, Ph.D, professor in the Department of Physiology
& Pharmacology at The University of Toledo College of
Medicine, explores approaches to managing the wild horse
population of the American West which numbers more than
35,000.
The final Hot Topics offering for 2015 is a Holiday
Luncheon and Concert. Music from the American song book,
Broadway, jazz, Gershwin, Cole Porter and holiday selections
will be performed by Joy Turner, a piano teacher and
professional musician. Turner has played for Julie Andrews
among others. The cost for this special luncheon and concert
is $18 for members and $30 for non-members.
