NANBPWC Delivers School Supplies to Keyser Elementary

Special to The Truth

The members of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs Inc., (NANBPWC) - Toledo Club’s Education Committee believe that every child should not be left behind and that educational assistance is a must in helping students focus on classes.

If a student does not have the educational tools to work with, then many opportunities to learn will be missed. Therefore the NANBPWC, Inc Toledo Club Education Committee delivered school supplies to the students of Keyser Elementary School on Monday, October 26, 2015.

Donna Todd Health, chairman; Frances Collins, second vice president & Toledo Youth Club Advisor; Clara Brank, education chairman; Natasha Allen -Keyser Elementary School principal; Denise Black-Poon, Toledo Club president; Delores (Dee) Bates, Denise Cardwell, etiquette chairman, Barbara Tucker, former NCD governor.

The Education Committee is devoted to implementing an array of activities to help students achieve in many ways such as weekly tutorials, scholarships, providing etiquette classes and so much more. Denise Cardwell has also helped teach etiquette classes to students at Stewart Academy for Girls, Cotillion Débutantes, Deb's in Waiting as well as many others.

Clara Brank, educational chairman, and committee members hold weekly tutorial sessions for the second grade students each Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. at Keyser Elementary School. The NANBPWC, Inc. Education Committee networks with members of Phi Delta Kappa. The focus is on math and reading which is part of the "STEMS" and STREAMS programs. The committee has also collected belts to donate each year to elementary boys to prevent them from having sagging pants.

Weekly rehearsals for the club’s major scholarship program, the Debutantes Cotillion Ball. Rehearsals are also held at Keyser Elementary School each Wednesday from February until May.  The members extended thanks to TPS and to Principal Natasha Allen for supporting the NANBPWC, INC.-Toledo Club. Wilma Brown is the scholarship chairman.

Allen said: "We appreciate the support of NANBPWC and the donations of school supplies for our students" Principle Allen says Keyser is committed to academic excellent.

The staff, Keyser family and students work hard toward focusing on educational, personal and social goals. Parents are strongly encouraged to become involved in the school. When parents attend school, they demonstrate to children that they value school and education. Attending events such as open house, math nights, parent teacher conferences and PTO meetings are all important ways in which parents learn about what goes on in school.

Volunteers  (like NANBPWC ) are important examples of shared responsibilities. There are innumerable opportunities for volunteers , whether it's the classrooms,  participating in PTO activities,  helping in the library or by chaperoning field trip.

Parents can also learn about these opportunities through school newsletters, PTO and fliers.

The National Program focuses on making our communities aware of ways we help through  the (LET'S) program initative.

Toledo Club President Denise Black-Poon is a former educator in the Toledo Public Schools system and sees a need to help students. She feels that sometimes a child will perform better and have higher expectations in life if he receives the proper guidance and, from the community,  individual help and family.

Proper school supplies, books and financial support are needed to build the foundation but spending time with each child to challenge her mind makes it fun and excites her imagination. Learning then becomes something that she doesn't mind doing.

Black-Poon also says that the  Toledo Club supports education from elementary to college years through  donations, scholarships, training , workshops, mentoring and anyway possible to help them achieve a better quality of education.
