Toledo Gives Favorite Son a Key to the City
“When I’m in that ring,
I’m fighting for everybody in this city,” said Robert
Easter, Jr. as he gazed upon the crowd of well-wishers who
gathered at One Government Center to thank him for bringing
glory to his hometown.
The mutual love-fest
followed a parade in the champ’s honor through the city’s
downtown streets and city officials, led by Mayor Paula
Hicks-Hudson, came together to present Easter with a key to
the city. The IBF lightweight champion, who captured the
title with a split decision on September 9 in Reading, PA,
with a split decision over previously undefeated Richard
Commey of Ghana, trained for his bout at the Glass City Gym
and did his roadwork on Toledo streets.
A 2010 graduate of Bowsher
High School, Easter improved his career record to 18-0.
“We are so proud to call
him ours,” said Hicks-Hudson. “He belongs to us and we
belong to him.”
