The Community Solidarity
Response Network held a rally at the Frederick Douglass
Community Association on Saturday, April 15 to voice support
for victims of sexual abuse.
“As a community we are
outraged,” said L.J. Hamilton, one of the organizers. “It is
time to turn that outrage into action. It is time for the
people to do what the churches refuse to do. It is time for
the people to do what the government will never do.”
Washington Muhammad urged
the audience to volunteer at local community centers, at
local schools and at blockwatch events in order to be more
active in addressing the problem of violence and sexual
abuse.
The event, dubbed the
“Find Our Women, Save Our Girls” Rally drew several dozen
supporters to listen to community activists address the
issue of how to save black girls (and boys) from the type of
sexual abuse that has galvanize the attention of the
community in recent weeks.
In addition to Hamilton
and Muhammad speakers included; Yvette Muhammad; Celia
Williamson, PhD; Cece Norwood; Carter Thomas; Ruth Courtney
and Cyrus Jones, II.
